Postcards from Accrington

This is a project George Lovett and Tim Philips carried out in Accrington in 2005-6. They asked people their favourite places in the town centre and then tried to pitch a tent there. This really tested what was ‘public’ space- what was possible and difficult- i think that they paid for a parking space outside a ‘favourite shop’- but the traffic warden still moved them on- although they had legitimately paid for the space… There were of course issues with the space owned by the company running the shopping arcade- their security guards were some of the most clear about what was possible and not in the space. This really seems to pre-empt the more widespread camping that is happening as part of the protests…
